<image:title>Blog - Are We There Yet?</image:title>
<image:caption>I came across my original letter of appointment from 1990, to the then “Scottish Society for Autistic children”. I was offered the role of “Assistant Principal for Day Services” in a service that supported twenty autistic adults. The job title baffles me now however it was indicative of where the organisation was at the time. Having opened our school, the next logical step for our founders was to think about support for adults. Of course, they used their tried and tested structure to develop that but adult services aren’t the same and its thankfully, not terminology that has been used in a long time.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Say Hello, Wave Goodbye</image:title>
<image:caption>But how? How do we resit and challenge what feel like an onslaught of cuts, undervaluing and dehumanising decision making? The tools at our disposal such as campaigning and influencing do create change, but it is glacial. Engaging politicians and influencing can work, but people come and go. We participate in consultations and make ourselves heard, but we deserve better to be the current flavour of the month or to form part of a programme for government which, grateful as we are, is always going to be short term. However, none of this means we should stop trying, it is all we can do.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - “A Little Less Conversation…. Please”</image:title>
<image:caption>Conversations with colleagues can provide the spark for professional development, for growth and change. I am fortunate enough to have had many of them and can honestly say that such discussions have been vital in taking me to a place where my understanding of sound, ethical practice bears no resemblance to the ideas I had at the start of my career. The conversations I have had with autistic people have kept me focused on the cause and have enriched my understanding beyond anything I learned on a Masters programme. It’s a different type of learning, at times, it has been the hard way. I haven’t always managed those exchanges well, but console myself that recognising that is progress towards doing better.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Short termism: A plague on all our (third sector) houses</image:title>
<image:caption>Another project provides post diagnostic support to families of autistic people. For so many reasons, the right support at diagnosis, is vital, not least as it sets the narrative for individuals and families that will follow them throughout their lives. It ensures people are directed to enabling support rather than snake oil and “cure” narratives that proliferate the internet. Crucially, it says to people that they matter, it recognises that support is needed, and it signals that people have value. Why, then, is it so difficult to sustain these services? We are caught in an endless round of budget cycles, “projects” are set up with limited timescales that don’t always match that cycle so there are gaps.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - "Everybody Counts or Nobody Counts"</a></image:title>
<image:caption>We seem, as a society, to be so disparaging and distrustful of people who have needs. Particularly needs that require to be met by the state. There is however quite an interesting paradox in that, as a country, we raise millions for “Children in Need” yet we often don’t want to confront the reality of that need, or, indeed, the fact that those children grow up to be adults whose needs don’t magically vanish and in many cases deepen due to repeated trauma.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Past, Present and Future.</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the major things that hasn’t changed is the lack of societal understanding and, the at times, awful experiences autistic people and their families have had. I have lost count of the times my heart has cracked at the disgraceful injustices people face. I can only imagine the trauma and damage the cumulative effect the failings that are endemic in our systems and services have had and continue to have on people.</image:caption>
